Marathon - 26.2 miles of history

Before you put your shoes on to walk or run the trails and roads, explore the history of the land you will explore. We give great thanks to our partners in the National Park Service, the towns of Sharpsburg and Shepherdstown, and Shepherd University for the privilege of hosting this event.

The entire marathon course is encased in National Park Land, with some brief detours through the country roads and preserved history towns that connect them.

The full marathon is a point to point with a small net elevation loss. You course 4.5 miles Harpers Ferry National Park, cover 10 flat miles on C&O Canal, roll over a country road to Antietam Battlefield for 2 miles, cover 5 rolling miles of the rich land of Antietam, and finish with 4.5 flat to downhill miles into Shepherdstown.

Marathon Schedule 

6:00am Shuttles to the marathon start will leave from Shepherd Wellness Center.There will be several buses but all buses will leave at 6am so please arrive by 5:45am.

There will be one shuttle bus leaving from the Shepherdstown Clarion Hotel for hotel guests only at 6am.

6:00 – 7:00am: Late Packet Pick Up at Marathon Start (Harper's Ferry Natioanal Park Vistor's Center)

7:30am – Marathon Start

Important Notes for Marathoners

  • There will be a bag drop at the start line, your bags will be taken to the finish.
  • Runners will not be able to register to run the marathon on Race Day.
  • Shuttles back to the marathon start will take place from 10:30am – 2:30pm from the Bavarian Inn.
  • Parking is available at the start at Harper's Ferry Vistor Center and Shepherdstown 
  • All courses will be open until 2pm to allow participants to experience the rich scenery and history of the course, this gives marathon participants 6.5 hours to complete the course. 

     

Half Marathon - 13.1 miles of hills and history

The half marathon runs a short segment on the C&O Canal after leaving West Virginia across the Potomac. You then join the marathon course and run the hills of Antietam. After the Antietam tour you run through historic Sharpsburg to return over the Rumsey Bridge to Shepherdstown.

7:00am - 8:00am: Parking in Shepherdstown

7:00am - 8:30am: Packet Pickup and Race Day Registration for Half Marathon, 5k,10k in Midway Field outside Ram Stadium

8:30: Half Marathon start on German St. in front of Library 

     

10K & 5K - Scenic Tour of Potomac River and Shepherdstown

The 5k and 10k are spectacular courses starting on German St Shepherdstown, running along the Potomac and River Road, and looping Rumsey Monument. A family friendly route great for all skill levels and athletic abilities.

Kids Run

Freedom’s Run for Kids-11 AM

Distance- One Mile

 

 

Come run, walk, stroll a fun filled mile in Historic Shepherdstown. This non competitive event is FREE and open to all ages. Start in front of Sara Cree Hall, adjacent to the main Half Marathon, 5k, 10k starting areas at the Stadium. Run up the festive German Street and finish in front of Shepherd University Stadium. Strollers welcome.

Last year we had 400 children running happily through our historic downtown….what a beautiful site.

Kids Run Registration will Open August 20th.

Children’s obesity is an epidemic state, and our Event provides children an innovative, fun and safe place to exercise. Children who begin running as exercise at an early age continue with exercise as a life style choice through their elementary, middle, and high school activities.
