Wild and Wonderful Trails

Over 40 community partners have come together as a coalition in a project titled “Wild and Wonderful Trails for Every Child”. Our goal is to build a nature trail and community garden at every school and park in the county. Our fundraising and volunteer activities will support accessible after school programs on the local trails to build family fitness, teach nutrition through “edible” gardens, and hopefully reattach children back to nature. The initiative will designate safe routes to school for walking and biking, gather and distribute donor bikes to put kids and bikes on these routes- and over time hopefully change the culture of how the community lives. The vision is a ring of trails initially focused around the school and expanding and connecting as the community sees the value not just in health, but in the aesthetic economic impact a pedestrian and bike friendly community brings.

The Washington’s Way West Heritage Alliance has been working for two years to build partnerships throughout the region to create a National Heritage Area. This National Heritage Area we envision could be the most visited National Heritage Area of the 49 already established in the United States. Our story begins with the land and the river, their formation and habitation. It traces the path of settlement, and migration, early transportation along and across the rivers. It tells the story of commercial trade from fur trading to canal building and shipment of agricultural and coal to the port of Georgetown. The story does not end it continues, and with a National Heritage Area we not only celebrate our heritage but bring history into the present to create a sustainable future. A future where sustainable economic development can take root in land that saw the creation of the many institutions we as Americans can take pride in.

Hedgesville High School has a proud history of track and field accomplishments for over twenty years under head coach Dan Comer. We are a small, rural school and despite our lack of a track facility, have managed to win two state championships as well as being a runner-up twice. In addition to that, Hedgesville has won ten regional championships! Can you imagine what we would accomplish with a track?
Our goal is two-fold. We want to raise money for our own track facility and we want to get our community active and moving! A track facility would not only provide much needed space for our team but also serve as a place where individuals and families in our neighborhood can walk and run safely.
The challenge of Freedom’s Run serves as a banner to rally our team, coaches, teachers, parents, and neighbors to a more active life style. We envision family members and friends challenging each other to set goals, train together, and celebrate the success of completing an event. We hope to educate and inspire as we work together to accomplish the dream of our own track facility!
Please join our team as we get Hedgesville moving or support our cause by sponsoring one of our runners/walkers! You, yourself, would be an excellent candidate for the race!

The Civil War Preservation Trust
With more than 55,000 members, The Civil War Preservation Trust (CWPT) is America's largest non-profit organization (501-C3) devoted to the preservation of our nation's endangered Civil War battlefields. In addition to land preservation the Trust provides and promotes educational programs to inform the public of the war's history and the fundamental conflicts that sparked it.
During the Freedom’s Run participants will have the opportunity to run or walk on Civil War battlefield land that has been preserved by the CWPT and its partners. The Trust is proud to be part of protecting this environment and hopes that all participants and supporters will take the time to appreciate the natural beauty and historical significance of the land around them. Our goal is to give all Americans a similar opportunity to experience Civil War battlefields.
Nearly 20 percent of America's Civil War battlefields have already been destroyed—denied forever to future generations. Of those that remain, only 15 percent are protected as National Parks. There is only one national organization working to save all these battlefields: The Civil War Preservation Trust.
We can't save these threatened battlefields alone—we need help from concerned citizens like you.

Mended Little Hearts of Winchester, Virginia

Mended Little Hearts is a support program dedicated to inspiring hope in those who care for the littlest heart patients. The core goal is to connect families in crisis with others who have survived the shock of learning a child has a Congenital Heart Defect, navigated the maze of medical decisions and procedures, and mapped out a plan for the future. Mended Little Hearts was developed and is supported by The Mended Hearts, Inc., a national organization with over fifty years of experience serving heart patients and their families.
We provide the community with education and advocacy about congenital heart defects, as well as support to the families both on a daily basis and while they are away at their respective hospitals receiving treatment. MLH of Winchester has participated in wellness fairs and conferences as well as hosted a “spirit station” in the 2010 March of Dimes walk. We organized “Team Aron” (formed in memory of one of our members who passed away from CHD as a way to raise awareness), a group of individuals who ran in the Apple Blossom 10K, and recently teamed up with another local organization to host our first charity golf tournament, all to spread awareness about congenital heart defects. We also organize social events to allow our families to connect and help each other through these difficult times.
